A couple of years ago I spoke to my cousin Seighean O Draoi (Shane Drew) about any interesting characters from our families past. Seighean at the time has being tracing our family tree back along with my other cousin Ronnie Drew. Ronnie and Seighean shared a great passion for this history.
Seighean is a sculptor by trade and specialises in Celtic Mythology and Irish History, so I knew he would have some good information about my families past.
According to Seighean O Draoi (who has now traced our family heritage back over 400 years) there is a possibility that this piece “Planxty Drew” was written by the blind harpist Turlough O’Carolan (1670-1738) for a Captain Drew. Turlough used to travel the roads of Ireland composing and collecting pieces of music. It is said that Johann Sebastian Bach was influenced by O’Carolan. A Planxty is a piece composed by O’Carolan as a thank you for people allowing him stay the night in their home. Drew and O’Carolan were both around at the same time so it’s nice for me to believe the possibility that these two knew each other and this piece was written for a distant relative.
